Masterful Cane Weaving and Upholstery

We are not only experts at upholstering with fine fabrics, we are also expert weavers of cane, rush, and shaker seating. Many pieces of furniture involve weaving cane by hand, through drilled holes around the frame, strand-by-strand, in order to create those recognizable patterns that we love. Cane is ideally left natural but is often stained based on your preference. Pressed cane comes is various sizes and different weave patterns. So whether your chair demands hand caning or pressed caning, Imperial has you covered.

Cane and rush compliment upholstered furniture very well, juxtaposing different types of materials, textures, patterns, and colors. We keep the lost art of seat weaving alive at Imperial.

From Classic Handwoven Patterns to Modern Pressed Cane, Imperial Decorating Revitalizes Your Furniture with Craftsmanship and Style.

The most recognizable is the classic octagonal shape often seen on chair seats, dining chair backs, and foyer benches.

We also do the modern and more prevalent “pressed cane” which looks identical, but the material is woven by machine and comes on a roll. It is then cut to size, tucked into a groove in the furniture, glued in place and finished with a binder.

Another type of cane called slab rattan which is often seen on porch rockers. This is a super-sturdy type of cane that typically is woven to reveal a basket weave pattern. Once completed, they can be left natural, stained, or painted, depending on the type of rattan used.

Rush is an altogether different type of material which can be natural or a paper fiber, that is woven by hand. The unique pattern looks similar to four triangles that meet in the center of the seat. After weaving, we seal the rush with shellac for added performance, protection, and longevity.
